It's midday in the picturesque village of Hogsmeade, and Karkat has finally made an escape from Kankri's overbearing presence after directing him to some poor sap of a third year that was trying to fiddle with one of the shop signs. Dumbass was probably going to be stuck there for the rest of the trip, listening to his windbag of a wombsibling's speeches and wishing he was deaf. Idiot.
Well, at least he made for a good scapegoat. Karkat was just hoping to finally sit down and relax for once, with all thoughts of school work, family drama, and interhouse assholery set aside for the time being. He had a brand new romance novel to crack open and a corner in Madam Puddifoot's Tea Shop calling his name... Plus, who knew what couples would find their way into the well-known dating venue. He did love finding a fresh bit of gossip to pass off later...
And, well, if it made him feel kind of wistful and sorry for himself in the process, no one had to know. Reading and watching was the closest he ever got to experiencing the feelings of romance, really, if you didn't count his horrible attempts at flirting with Terezi and John in their first and second years. He'd given that up, even if it still left him sort of sore to think about it.
He enters the shop with the usual set to his shoulders looking a little more slumped, his expression far off and vaguely pensive.

Madam Puddifoot's Tea always seemed to calm stressed students and let their minds unwind from the cluttered thoughts of remembering potions to simply ignoring ignorant or rude comments from other houses. Needless to say, Feferi Peixes was there often, and more often lately due to the fact Eridan and herself were in a quarrel and the library was too much of a hot spot to run into him.
So, she was sitting in a back corner away from the various couples with a cup of warm Blackberry Tea with her studies sprawled across the table, and humming to herself, she read the recipies for her upcoming quiz and tried to ignore the disgusting feeling in the pit of her stomach. It was a painfully common feeling, a mixture of doubt/anger/and all around shitty emotions.
But, Feferi was a good enough actress to ignore this feeling and put on her bubbly fascade when confronted with others, but again she didn't expect others to be there. Her eyes were a direct sign to her stress, for they looked heavy and weak, and her usual perky posture was slumped forward.
Today sucked, and there isn't anything that could make it wor-... Correction. Karkat was here.
Not that that was a bad thing, it's just that she HATES when he can even hint to see Feferi's upset, for he has a rather harsh/blunt way of trying to cheer her up. Maybe, if he does see her, they could simply drink tea and act as if nothings wrong.
Maybe.

Karkat spots Feferi first amidst the other unfamiliar faces in the cafe, trying not to make his hesitancy to approach her all that obvious but contemplating just ignoring the look on her face and continuing on to the only unoccupied corner. He sighs long-sufferingly and knows that would probably be the most asshole move he could possibly make today, figuring she could probably use somebody to talk to... God he just hoped it wasn't about Eridan. He was NOT getting in the middle of that unholy mess.
He changes course, pausing to give a gruff hello to the waitress and telling her he wanted a cup of black coffee before sitting down at Feferi's table without asking. Throwing his bookbag down on the floor and crossing his arms, he sits back in his seat and waits. He's completely silent for a long rare moment as he stares her down intensely. Any moment now....

She caught a glimps of his catious look, and to be honest it was even more disheartening than what was actually bothering her. The fact that he looked like the thought of Feferi rambling to him about her personal problems made him wanna high-tail it outta there made her feel as if her problems were petty and annoying. Which to a lot of people they were, but mainly because she didn't talk about the underlying problems like her Mom, she simply covered those up with the Eridan bullshit (because Eridan was the only one who talked about her Mother with her)
But some smidge of decency struck Karkat that day when he actually walked over to her table and sat down. She knew he knew, it wasn't that hard to tell he did, but that wouldn't stop her from givin' a wide grin and straightening her demeanor before greeting him.
" Hey CrabCatch, whatchya' up to today? Got some time off I sea! "

"Don't give me that, princess. " He growls out sarcastically, his stare turning a bit harder as he waits for her to spit it out. He wants to make her feel better, yeah. But as quickly and efficiently as possible. As much of a huge self-wanky dicktwatter he always felt like, he couldn't just walk past her table and leave her to work shit out on her own, because people never fucking worked things out for themselves in a timely manner. Sometimes what they needed was a loud wake up call or someone to point out the obvious... or just someone to sit and listen. Either way, he was here. Begrudgingly, yes, but then that was normal for him.
"Spit it out. Is it Eridan? Schoolwork? Relationship issues? Family? Please don't dance around this because I swear to god I will literally drown myself in coffee if Kankri actually fucking manages to pry himself away from his latest lecture to come find me before I've even gotten through the first chapter of my book. I may be fucking great at tuning him out but that doesn't mean I want to subject the rest of these lovelorn morons to it while they're trying to work their ways up to shoving their tongues in each other's throats! Romance is scared! And I won't have either you or Kankri ruining it!" ... Ironically enough it's his own shouting that disturbs a few of the nearby couples, interrupting their conversations to glance over at the two of them.

Her expression quickly twisted into that of agitation before quickly returning her over enthusiastic smile once that god awful insult left his lips, because Karkat knew damn well that she was anything BUT a princess an she'd worked her ass off to get where she is today and she'll be damned if he was going to make it seem as if her problems were related to that if a girl who had everything handed to her. And the fact he wouldn't stop rambling out things that were wrong with her just made her boil in her own pot of irritation.
" Okay Karkat, how about you slow your roll for a couple of seconds so we can get just a feeew things STRAIGHT. If you ever call me 'princess' again I swear on Dumbledore's' word I will show you how much of a 'flippin' princess I am by kicking your rambling ass. And secondly, maaaybe if you would quit with the romance bullshit you cherish so much you'd realize that accusing me of possibly ruining something you CARE about it ISN'T going to make me feel like a better human being that I already am, because when people are upset they tend to feel as if they ruin everything (hint hint). So THANK YOU /SO MUCH/ for that one. And in case you actually do care what I'm upset about instead of me simply screwing your evening up, my unsupportive Mother who thinks I'm pretty much worthless unless I'm caring to her every wish has sent me yet ANOTHER letter of disappointment and since Eridan is too busy with his head up Sollux's ass he doesn't think that it's a "top priority" to deal with. And OBVIOUSLY it isn't yours either.
So! Enjoy your coffee! I'm going to pack up my things and walk aimlessly somewhere so I don't ruin your perfectly romance filled evening, although you've managed to kill that vibe in the air by pointing out the fact you relish in it. " Her tone was obviously fake optimism dripping with passive aggression, but that's how she dealt with things. And packing up her things is exactly what she was doing.

"N-no! Wait! I'm sorry! I didn't mean to- shit, fuck! I am such a horrible fucking friend I didn't mean to be like that with you. I was just- Kankri's been on my case all day and I shouldn't have taken it out on you. Please sit down. Or at least let me go with you. C'mon, I'll pick up your tab." He backtracks quickly, dismay clear in his face as he tries to salvage the quickly deteriorating situation. Oh god he was such an awful prick. This was why no one could stand him and part of the goddamn reason he was doomed to be alone in the first place.
"I'm sorry I called you princess. It was shitty of me and your mom is shit for putting that on you. And I know Eridan is an ass. I tell him to talk to you more every time he brings you up. I'm shit too. Sorry. Fuck. Can I just... start over?" He ends lamely, looking anxious and worried now. He hated proving to himself what an asshole he was. The constant battle to cover up past Karkat's mistakes was always a nightmare.

She paused with her book closed firmly in her hands, her eyes focused on the table top instead of Karkat's expression, (for she didn't want to start crying/ler him see her cry), when she heard his tone shift from something forced to genuine, allowing her body to release the tension caused by her rant. Her muscles relaxing as her grip on her supplies loosened, the books gently falling to the hard surface underneath.
She knew she went too far with her personal problems and insulted Karkat in response to a misunderstanding, and she felt like absolute shit. Dammit Fef, you need to calm down before jumping to conclusions.
"I-I'm sorry I blew up on you.. I've just been trying to keep everything together because I'm /fine/ and that word just triggered me and I shouldn't have piled my personal problems on to you.. There's no need to get the tab, and there's no need to apologize or try and make me feel better. You obviously came here to relax and I'm slowly turning that to shit... I'm sorry Crabcatch... " She still refused to look up at him, but she wasn't pretending anymore. This was Feferi in the raw, and scary truth of herself.

"No, no it's fine. I shouldn't have prefaced all my bullshit with... well, more bullshit. I'm so used to everyone just sort of taking it or ignoring it and spilling shit regardless that I forget to tone it down sometimes. Sit back down, please? We can get you some more tea and we'll have a nice talk and all. I won't even cuss, I swear. Does swearing count? ... Also does cussing at the people who do mean shit to you count too? Fuck I don't know if I can live up to that promise if it does, but I'll try. Even if I have to just hold my goddamn breath because fuck knows I don't deserve to so much as breathe sometimes." He rants, leaning back into his chair and looking a little relieved she's not about to run, hands on his head and fingers digging into his scalp, scratching and tugging at his own eternally messy hair.
"Honestly I can never relax. Joke's on me, really. I would have probably spent the whole time agonizing over something else and I like distracting myself with other people's problems- as macabre and vaguely creepy as that sounds. Sorry. I mean obviously you don't HAVE to tell me anything, but I'm here to lend an ear if you need one. Eridan and I talk a lot anyway so it's not like I'm entirely unfamiliar with some of your problems..." He gives her a weak smile that looks out of place on his face, his eternally grumpy expression gone for a split moment and replaced by concern before it goes back to the norm.

It was a true fact that people tended to ignore Karkat's harsh tone (most of the time), mainly because he was always like that about nearly everything you presented to him (except when he's not) and most simply don't see a point in arguing with him, and because he usually wins said arguments. But, again, with this in mind Feferi couldn't have really expected anything different from him, so she sat back down and listened to his mouth run a mile a minute. It was actually rather endearing how badly he tended to ramble, and small bit about swearing made her giggle.
But that one sentence about breathing caught her off guard, and by the time she had collected her thoughts to create a proper response relating to how special he actually was he had already moved on to another topic.
"Dammit Eridan, quit telling people things." She mumbled to no one in particular, always finding herself annoyed when she heard of Eridan spilling her personal problems among their other friends. But, that wasn't her concern right now.
" I pretty much gave you the jist of things in my small bitch attack, so there's not really anything else to cover. Unless you'd like to discuss how immensely sweet it is that you'd be so quick to filter that potty mouth a'yours for someone who just insulted you.. plus your hair is an absolute mess as always and it makes me want to fix it to highlight that cute lil' face. " She gave a ginger smile, her eyes focusing on him at last.

"Oh whatever." He grumps, genuinely embarrassed and now the one avoiding eye contact. "Insults are something I can deal with easy." It was compliments that made him squirm, having a hard time accepting them as true or valid in any way. He rationalizes it away as meaningless and moves on, resting his chin in hand as he looks up at the waitress and thanks her as she sets his coffee down before moving on. Pulling it closer and watching as the steam rises, he continues talking in a low tone and reflects on what she told him only a few moments before.
"And it's less Eridan telling me things than me picking up on it and verbally prodding him with a hot poker until he spills, so blame me if anyone. He just... is way too focused on 'Thollux' right now, I think. He's wishy washy, you know? Probably hormones going to his head. Or the dye in his hair leaking through his scalp to fuck with his sense of the world around him. Either way, he shouldn't let his other friends out to dry just because he has someone he's pursuing a relationship with. He has other relationships to maintain, even if they aren't romantic ones. He's taking yours for granted."
"And as for your mother, she should be the one focusing on your needs. It's totally understandable to be upset about her lack of support. Family problems are always the worst.... you can choose your friends but you can't choose your blood. I guess the only thing I can recommend is sticking close to friends and keep making plans for when you can legally get out from under her thumb. I know it's sort of assbackwards and runs the risk of being counterproductive, but maybe you should ask Kankri about that. Jesus knows he's got the whole fucking judicial system for half of Europe memorized." He says thoughtfully, looking out the window as if to see if Kankri's lurking outside.

Feferi could always tell when Karkat got embarrassed, mainly because his tone of voice always seemed to lower down to a rather gruff position and he'd always blame it on a completely unrelated part of the conversation, if not the complete opposite of what caused said embarrassment. That, plus his eyes would always try and shuffle anywhere but in the sight of the embarrasser in order to conceal the flush in cheeks that was threatening to show through. She had only managed to see Karkat blush one time (at that point) after she pointed out the fact his gaze was wondering over her hips while walking one afternoon their 1st year.
Letting him finish his slur of advice and comfort before Feferi spoke again, her tone was much more relaxed than previously mentioned, and for once she was talking to someone other than Eridan like she did with Eridan.
" I understand that I'm not the most important relationship in Eridan's life, and I can live with that, but all I ask is that he at least PRETENDS to be concerned and focused with what I'm trying to deal with or talk about it. We've been so close for so many years, he's one of the only (if not the only) person I can talk to about anything. And he thinks just because I didn't want to 'marry him' when we were LITERALLY 8 years old that I didn't (doesn't) have feelings for him in that sense, and he always has to rub it in when he starts 'talking' to someone new... Concerning my Mom? I'd much rather ignore her letters for a few more years instead of brooding over the content in them, I'm surprised I haven't gotten the will power to simply throw them away before I dare open the wax seal...
I guess I just keep hoping that it's her saying she's sorry, and supports my decision to further my knowledge in magic and maybe make something of myself.. But I know it's not, and it never will be, so there's no use in getting worked up over it.. "
Her breathing was slowly started to get harder for her to handle when the painful thought of her mother's tight grip on her life flowed through her mind, and trying to calm down she shakily took a sip of her tea.

Well it's one thing to know you'd be better off ignoring something and a whole other to control your emotional responses to it. If it's something you're having trouble with it's by no means less validated just because you're aware of why you shouldn't get worked up over it. Eridan should be there for you when you open her nasty fucking letters and the fact that he's not just means he needs a wake up call- whether it's one he finds for himself or where someone grabs his fucking face and shoves it in the problem so he can fucking acknowledge it. You should sit down and have a long talk with him about this. No bullshit, no passive aggression, and don't fucking baby him. I know the desire to is always there- Hell, even I sort of pull my punches when it comes to him since god knows he's about as sensitive and delicate as a one ply tissue in a blizzard above a goddamn volcano, but- .... Well. Every relationship needs communication if you want it to go both ways. Even platonic ones. Especially platonic ones, actually. "
"The same goes for your mom, really. If she doesn't want to let you communicate, then it's not going to be anything resembling a good relationship. She's toxic for you. Maybe start busying yourself looking for other sort of fulfilling mentor relationships. Start visiting your favorite teacher or someone else you know will support you. Hell, even Eridan's dad. I mean I don't know him well but I bet if you play your cards right you could make a good ally out of him when it comes to your mom..." He pauses to take a sip from his coffee, looking down at it thoughtfully. Maybe he'd go talk to Eridan if there was no visible improvement with them in the next few days. Feferi liked to beat around the bush and just sort of hint at things most of the time but Eridan needed to be slapped in the face with realizations or they never fucking stuck. It was great and all he and Sollux were dating or whatever, and he was happy for them, but it would be a mistake to let his other relationships suffer just because he was holding onto some kind of stupid grudge from his and Feferi's childhood.

Feferi listened with intent to the long string of words Karkat spewed out at her, (although she really just loved listening to his voice) and for once in her life she finally heard his voice in a comforting tone. No sarcasm, no loud tone, nothing harsh, he was talking to her like she was an actual human being that he... Well.. Maybe cared about. She realized if she weren't there the next day he would know, he would care, and that was something she hadn't gotten from anyone else but Eridan in her entire life. It was actually really nice, and she felt a genuine smile peek across her plum colored lips. Not her usual oversized, rather annoying smile. No, it was just a normal smile, and with that her shoulders perked back up, her posture straightening before she took another sip of her tea.
" Thank you Karkat, I really appreciate the fact you even walked over to this table, let alone sacrifice time outta your day to come an'talk to me... I REELY enjoy your company and your advice is something I would've realized, but just avoided it for who knows how long.. So, again, thank you.. You don't understand how much it means t'me. " She was hoping to finally regain his gaze, so that he could see the pure emotion in her eyes when she spoke these words to him. People don't cherish Karkat the way they should, the way he deserves, but Feferi did, and always will. Even if he doesn't want her to.
Breaking from her rather intense mood, she gave a small giggle before reaching a hand across the table and fixing a small strand of hair near his cheek. " Do you even know what a'hairbrush is? "

Karkat jerks a bit at the gentle touch, not having expected it or prepared for it at all. He's still not very good at all with people in his personal space, and even if he doesn't mean to be rude, it's a kneejerk reaction he can't exactly help. A quiver of something not exactly pleasant runs through his spine and he rubs his face where she'd brushed her fingers gently. "'Course I do. I just don't bother since it always gets messy again by lunchtime. I fingercomb it, at any rate."
He gives her a weak attempt at a smile back, though, trying to cover up for his skittishness. He was glad he'd helped, at least. It made him feel better in the long run, and he hoped things worked out for her. She was always nice to him, even if she could get passive aggressive, and he appreciated the lack of harassment he was so used to getting from most of their other friends. The way she was looking at him made him feel kind of weird, though. It was hard to keep eye contact when she was looking at him so intensely, not really feeling like he said anything to deserve that expression aimed at him and trying not to put too much stock into it. Jeez.
"I'm glad to help, though. If you ever want to sit and shoot the shit again, you can come borrow my ear. God knows no one else waits for an invitation, but it's no trouble for you." He takes a sip of his own drink to wet his (for whatever god forsaken reason) dry mouth, glancing up at her almost shyly and hiding his expression behind his still steaming cup.
