Character Name: Diamonds Droog
Professor or Student?: Professor
Age: 52
Subject : Potions
House: Slytherin

-LOOKS-
Appearance: Droog is tall (6’2”) and severe, with graying hair and cheekbones that jut out of his face at sharp angles. He has dark skin which seems oddly paired with his Russian surname, but it makes slightly more sense once you understand that great pains were taken to ensure that the name remained. He takes a certain amount of pride in his appearance, and his clothes are always ironed.

-ABOUT-
Personality: Droog is a pretty classy guy who does his best to hide any ridiculous content that his personality may contain within a professional and dignified presentation. He doesn't really do empathy, which is the root cause of why he seems so cold and uncaring all the time. He actually is cold and uncaring, and not inclined to apologize for that aspect of his personality unless there's a valid reason for doing so. (Like if you're Spades Slick or Roxy, because she is his favorite student.) And even then odds are he won't really apologize, because he's pretty stubborn.
Background: He comes from a pureblood family, and was raised in an environment where he had little to no contact with muggles. The paternal line in his family is Russian, hence the last name, and his father wanted to send him to the wizarding school there, but he ended up at Hogwarts because it was the more convenient choice.
Even when he was eleven his parents suspected that there was something off about him, they were worried for quite a while that he might be a squib because he never seemed to show any obvious signs of being magical. He was doing the typical uncontrollable underage magic, of course, but they didn’t see much of it because his childhood magic wasn’t accidental, it was usually very controlled.
Droogs time at Hogwarts was from 1973 – 1980 and during that time he showed absolutely no interest in dark magic during his time there. He was exceptionally good at transfiguration, and was alright at herbology, but he only really bothered with it when they were learning about things that were relevant to his interest in potion making components. As a pureblood Slytherin he was approached once or twice by people with Voldemort-style-ideas but he turned them down because murder for social change wasn't really his style.
But he does have a style, and social change doesn’t have anything to do with it. He knows his fair share of dark magic and potions that aren’t strictly legal but he’d rather use it for personal gain, not to fuel some nut’s new world order. His parents were right, there was (and is) something off about him. Droog likes murder. It interests him on a fundamental level. He has absolutely killed people, but the amount of forethought he put into those murders made is nearly impossible for them to be traced back to him.
After school he ended up robbing banks with and committing crimes with Slick. Naturally this involved him working really hard to keep his official record clean. There are suspicions that he may have been involved in several crimes, but no proof.
Around the time Slick got married Droog went off and traveled for a while, doing research on some of the rarer potions ingredients, which is where he was when she died. Eventually he made his way back to Britain where he found himself in need of a job, preferably one with resources. So he ended up back at Hogwarts.
Why is your character teaching the class they are? He has a certain degree of skill with regards to understanding how steps fit together to garner an end result, and during his time as a student he was very interested in why mixing ingredient A with ingredient B and then stirring counterclockwise 50 strokes will give you result C, so he looked into it and gained a working understanding of most of the ingredients used in potion making. Ultimately, because of this, he can skip or alter traditional steps and achieve the same (sometimes better) end results. He also finds all the measuring and the exact specifications that are governed by meticulous rules relaxing. It just makes sense to him.
As a child/student/young adult/adult he also took an interest in quiet but painful ways to kill people. No flash, no sound, just a few drops of something in their food. This is something he mostly kept quiet though.
Quirks & Et cetera: First! His wand is Cherry with dragon heartstring, which means it “possesses truly lethal power, whatever the core - though if paired with dragon heartstring, the wand ought never to be teamed with a wizard without exceptional self-control and strength of mind”. And his does have dragon heartstring, which is the sort of core that leans most easily towards being turned to the dark arts. But he doesn’t use it for anything dark. He prefers poison for that. And the wand respects him for his restraint. So they’re cool.
Second! The face thing. Droog has a little bit of trouble when it comes to reading facial expressions. He does not empathize. He doesn’t usually do much with his face aside from the usual unamused stare. And so it took him a long time to learn facial cues and their emotional connotations. He has it mostly down by now though, and can even fake a few (although he can’t cry and his smile still needs work). But he doesn’t really experience the feelings that go along with the facial expressions, so they hold no innate meaning for him, only the meanings that he’s memorized and learned. On bad days when he’s out of it or exhausted faces sometimes stop making sense altogether.
Third! He may or may not be in some kind of weird, vague relationship that is maybe just a friendship and is also possibly not with Slick. They don't talk about it. Ever. Because that would be weird.
